Today it has been one year since Nokorde was being put down beause of a sickness no one knew.

This article is a memorial for my beloved Nokorde, a Dutch Warmblood horse, since it has been a whole year since he had to be put down.

I first met Nokorde at the stable KBF (KalmarBygdens Fältrittklubb) in October 2006. I had only taken riding lessons there for a month and a half, since I had just moved to Kalmar from Stockholm. Since he was new too, I started to like him, and he had an unusual trot that fit me well. It was not until spring 2007 that I started to really like him and walk into his stall before and after every riding lesson. Though I was never at the stable on days other than the riding lesson days, Nokorde and I had a special bond. When I rode him, it was like we could read each other's minds.

For instance, we had a jumping lesson and I was a little scared. We walked around in a small volt, and when I felt a little dizzy, Nokorde just stopped and didn't want to walk. Another time, after a hard lesson, I was so tired when I was about to dismount him, and when my feet hit the ground I lost my balance and fell. It didn't hurt much, and Nokorde just turned his head and seemed to say "Are you okay?" That was what I heard in my head. I replied, "I'm fine" when I stood up again, and he just looked at me and I admitted, "Alright, it did hurt a little." And then he buffed his head on me. I loved him, and one time, when I gave him a kiss, he licked me back. I don't think I've ever been happier.

But there are two times that I remember the most with him. The first was the first time I got to ride out with the riding class. I got Nokorde and we galloped. Never before had I gotten to gallop with him for so long. It was wonderful. I still remember the feeling from that time, the last lesson before summer 2008.

The other time I remember was the last day I got to ride him before he got sick in September 2008. It was August 21st, a jumping lesson again. I had been tired all day, and I guessed I would fell off Nokorde like I did before when I dismounted him, and I felt he was tired too. But no, we jumped three bars and the second one was an oxer. Just before the jump I felt my left foot slide out of the stirrup. When he landed I had no balance; I leaned forward and my foot was out of the stirrup and before I knew it I had taken out my right foot too and rolled down to the ground. All I was thinking of was to hold the reins so Nokorde and I would be together. And nice as he was, Nokorde just stayed still when I fell off. I got up and got into the saddle again and took the last bar after making sure that both of us were okay. I swear that Nokorde sent me his thoughts so that I would fall without much harm.

After that, I went to APU (Arbets Plats Utbildning = Work Place Education) for three weeks. There, I had a nightmare about my darling: He was sick and was in a box, and he lay down with his head on my knees. He was dying, and he looked at me before he quivered and took his last breath with a tear in his eyes.

When I got home after those three weeks, my sister told me that Nokorde was sick. And you can bet that I was scared and thought about my nightmare. I went to the stable where I had riding lessons and found him in the box I dreamed of. He licked me, and I gave him a kiss. But then a Cabaré started at my school (since I was in senior year) and I was in it. So in the end, I wasn’t at the stable at all, even though Nokorde was always on my mind.

Then on December 4th, when my mom picked me up after training, she said that something had happened. At first I asked if it was about our pets, but it wasn't. I asked about the two neighbor dogs. When my mom shook her head, the truth came to me: Nokorde. He had been put down two days ago, on December 2nd, from his sickness. They hadn’t been able to find out what was wrong with him.

It felt like my heart was breaking over and over again. I cried all night, and didn't know what to do about the pain inside of me. I knew that he would have to be put down sooner or later, but it wasn't until I was in the stable again for the last riding lesson of the term that I understood why I felt so horrible. I never had the chance to say farewell to him. When I was there I cried. I had no one to go to, since Nokorde was the only horse that really comforted me when I cried. That only made me cry more. I went through that riding lesson on one of my other horse friends called Zantus, but with him you must concentrate, so for 45 minutes I tried not to think at all.

Three months later in March, I finished reading "Cindy's Heartbreak," book number 19 in the Thoroughbred Series. The ending reminded so much of Nokorde's end, and I wrote a song that can be seen here: [link]
